Who we are
Balaena is a new force in British maritime engineering, uniting some of the UK’s most capable ship repair, defence, fabrication and small-craft facilities under one modern brand. Our group spans major shipyards on the Tyne, Falmouth, Gibraltar and Birkenhead, supported by specialist fabrication and coating divisions and a dedicated small-vessel boatyard in Padstow. From large commercial vessels and naval platforms to offshore structures and workboats, Balaena delivers high-quality engineering built on deep heritage, powerful infrastructure and a highly skilled workforce.
Our Vision and Mission Statement
Balaena aims to lead British shipbuilding and ship maintenance by delivering excellence to commercial clients, Defence and Government agencies through a highly skilled, innovative and motivated workforce.
We are committed to driving national growth in shipbuilding and ship repair by modernising delivery processes, expanding and optimising capacity, and working in partnership with industry and Governments to ensure resilient, high-quality output.
Through world-class training and continuous workforce development, we will provide the skills and capability needed for a stronger, more competitive maritime sector.
Our Past
-
Balaena brings together the histories of Cammell Laird, A&P, Gibdock and Padstow Boatyard shipyards that have shaped British and international shipbuilding for generations. By unifying their capabilities, infrastructure and engineering talent, we are transforming these iconic facilities into a single, modern maritime powerhouse with the scale and expertise to support shipbuilding, ship repair and offshore engineering across the UK.
-
+ The shipyards that make up Balaena have evolved through decades of mergers, renamings and transformations each reflecting moments of ambition, resilience and reinvention.
+ Cammell Laird itself began as multiple entities before adopting the name that would become synonymous with British shipbuilding, and at one stage operated as North West Shiprepairers during its modern restructuring era.
+ Gibdock carries the heritage of Cammell Laird Gibraltar, reflecting a period when the iconic Merseyside shipbuilder extended its capabilities overseas.
+ A&P Group formed through the consolidation of family-owned yards and major shipbuilding assets from the North East to Falmouth, embodying decades of regional craftsmanship and marine engineering excellence.
+ Padstow Boatyard, with roots in traditional Cornish boatbuilding, represents the agile, small-craft expertise that continues to serve fishing, commercial and leisure fleets today.
+ Each name change wasn’t just administrative it marked a shift in vision, capability and ambition.
-
By bringing these legacies together under Balaena, we honour their histories while creating something new:
+ A single brand with the credibility of centuries of accumulated shipbuilding knowledge.
+ A unified group with 12 dry docks, national reach and deep engineering capability.
+ A modern identity designed to compete at the highest levels of defence, commercial and offshore energy markets.
+ Balaena is not just a name, it is the next chapter in a story written by generations of shipbuilders, engineers and craftspeople.
Balaena is creating a renewed future for British shipbuilding, driven by modern production methods, digital delivery, world-class training and a unified national yard network. Through investment in advanced manufacturing, expanded capacity and strong partnerships with Government and industry, we are building a resilient platform capable of delivering complex naval, commercial and offshore energy projects. Our focus is on long-term growth, skills development and supporting the next generation of maritime talent, shaping a smarter and more sustainable sector for decades to come.
